Description
The Puente Romano is a Roman bridge over the Guadiana River. It is the world's longest surviving bridge from ancient times, constructed in the 1st-2nd centuries. It was a very important bridge during the time of Roman colony of Emerita Augusta (the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, now Merida) as it provided an essential connection with Lusitania and the rest of the cities of the Empire. It once had an estimated overall length of 755 m with 62 spans. Today, there are 60 arches (three of which are buried on the southern bank) with a length of 721 m. Behind on the left, you get a small glimpse of the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortificaiton built in 835. These sites are part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Merida, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
