Description
On a hike from Riomaggiore to Portovenere in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, you quickly climb out of Riomaggiore to the hilltop and soon come upon the tiny settlement of Lemmen. According to a sign, “Lemmen is a suggestive hillside settlement mentioned in several documents dating to the 1200s.” Lemmen consists of typical hillside farms and several buildings, including a sanctuary chapel. As in many places in Italy, flowers (real or artificial) are placed in the windows of the chapels and/or in small altars along the trail. It is probable that the toponym Lemmen derives from ‘limes’ or ‘limine’ (limit or border).
